Jan Cornel, MD

Jan Hein Cornel is a Senior Cardiologist, Clinical Lecturer in Cardiology and former Chair of the Teaching Program in the Department of Cardiology at the NorthWest Clinics in Alkmaar, The Netherlands and an established research scientist. In 2020 he has been appointed as Professor of Medicine at the Radboud University in Nijmegen. He received his MD in Groningen in 1986 and subsequently received specialty training in cardiology at the Erasmus Medical Center (Thoraxcenter) in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, before achieving his PhD in 1996 at Erasmus University. Dr Cornel’s research career is focused on heart failure, atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease. At present, his work investigates the role of inflammation in atherosclerosis, he has served as the Dutch PI of LODOCO-2, a randomised, placebo-controlled trial of low-dose colchicine and is steering committee member of CLEAR OASIS 9. A fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), Dr Cornel is also a former President of the Dutch Network for Cardiovascular Research (WCN). He has served on a number of steering committees of international, multicentre cardiovascular studies including PLATO, TECOS, GLAGOV and CANTOS. Dr Cornel has authored or co-authored over 250 research papers in peer-reviewed journals.
